Located in the heart of the Pioneer Valley, South Hadley’s landscape is framed by the Connecticut River and the Mount Holyoke Range. The community offers a variety of recreational opportunities and a richly diverse mix of housing and is home to a world renowned college, shopping and dining, professional services, light industrial activity, and farms.

This project is partially funded by a Planning & Design Grant from the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program. More information may be found on the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners’ website a www.mass.gov/mblc. Additional matching support was received from the Friend of the Library and the citizens of South Hadley.

A library building program does not provide a design, but a model of services and spaces that a design may be based upon. I hope you share our vision of improved South Hadley Public Library services provided in a sensible, sustainable, and accessible building.

  • Introduction   The South Hadley Public Library was established by the town in the 19th century, given a permanent home then later expanded in the 20th century, and is now ready to move forward with an improved facility to meet the community needs of the 21st Century. (1 Page)

  • Community Profile   Settled in the late 1600’s, South Hadley was primarily an agricultural town until the first navigable canal in the nation was built along the Connecticut River in 1794.(2 Pages)

  • Building Program   For over a century, the South Hadley Public Library has remained a vital community resource that serves to enrich and unite the community through resources that inform, entertain, and connect our residents to a world of ideas and information.(58 Pages)

  • Strategic Plan   The library conducted a two-month community survey in the fall of 2007. Surveys were distributed at the library, town hall, and senior center. The survey was also available online and residents were encouraged to use this convenient method of responding. The library received three hundred and fifty-seven responses (357) providing much useful information on how the community uses the library, what our perceived strengths are, and where there is room for improvement. (25 Pages)

  • Energy Audit   The energy audit of the Public Library was part of a multi-site audit within the Town of South Hadley. A town wide summary, under separate cover, compiles recommendations for all of the buildings and sights included in the audit project. (23 Pages)
